A lesson in self-doubt. A story I personally rejected because it didn’t follow proper form or narrative structure was published by Purple Wall Stories. Let this be a lesson: never doubt yourself, never give up on yourself, never think you’re not good enough.
May 13th, 2020:
The hardest thing I’ve dealt with during the quarantine is the fact that I’ll never sell my story “Plague Doctors.” In December, I completed a rather filthy construction job that required me to wear a respirator most of the day. In January, I wrote a story about two scientists wearing respirators, working in a diseased landscape. I thought it was a neat idea for a story to have well defined characters, yet heave their faces covered the entire time. I sent the story to the usual markets and was rejected. This is nothing new, every story I write is rejected at least a couple of times. This time, however, I received a note from one of the editors saying they liked the story, but were not going to publish it because it hit a little too close to the current situation. This was about a week or so before quarantine took full effect (March 13th for us). Now, it’s been 2 months and I don’t think I’m going to convince any editors that this story was written before everyone strapped a mask to their face. I present it here for your enjoyment.
